Located on the largest island in the Lake of Bays, the Bigwin Island Golf Club is a 520-acre waterfront vacation and golf-course community. The island has a storied distant past as a luxurious summer resort – begun when the exclusive Bigwin Inn opened in 1920. Bigwin Island languished in the mid-20th century and the Inn was closed, but the golf club has flourished in recent years. superkül, along with four other architecture studios, was invited to submit a concept design for a new generation of golf cabins as part of an architectural competition.
superkül proposed three cabin designs, each specific to their landscape and location. All of the designs were inspired by the Island’s landscape of trees, grasses and water, its beauty, and its history as a gathering place. Each cabin features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a great room with kitchen, and a powder room. One bedroom and bathroom also include lock-out capabilities for rental purposes.
The individual cabins are specific, anchored in the topography and landscape of their sites, settling into the natural clearings and shelter of the Island. They are oriented to capitalize on and create a diversity of views, and are designed to be both private and connected – part of a greater whole.
With affordability and constructability in mind, the cabins imagine a powerful specificity and simplicity of form and siting. Internally, they are spaces of light, air and view. Externally, they amplify their sites, creating landscapes that are entwined and generous. The cabins sit lightly on the land yet aim to be a natural extension of it.
