Pearl Bayview Village

Toronto, Ontario

As a complete renovation of an existing space in Toronto’s Bayview Village shopping centre, this design for Asian restaurant Pearl layers white on white to produce a clean aesthetic in counterpoint to the typically hectic mall environment.

Frosted glass and a custom millwork screen in the shape of the Pearl logo are both functional and strategic, creating a visual connection and a welcoming entry point to the restaurant, while simultaneously providing a physical separation between the dining area and the hustle and bustle of mall traffic outside.

Anchored by a dark wood floor, the predominantly white space is accented by streamlined blonde wood chairs, creating a tranquil, soothing ambiance. Subtle colour and pattern become evident in the thematic details: inspired by the Chinese plum blossom, a layering of materials and tone-on-tone finishes is achieved through vinyl decals and acrylic panels die-cut in the shape of petals and flowers from the iconic tree that blooms in winter.
