Undergraduate Medical Education Suite

This renovation of existing classroom and student lounge space on the third floor of the Medical Sciences Building at the University of Toronto creates a collaborative and consolidated work environment for faculty, staff and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate student services division. The Medical Sciences Building, built in 1969, is the largest single building on the St. George Campus, and the staff united by this renovation were previously scattered throughout the building.

Founded in 1843, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine ranks among the top academic medical institutions in the world. With over 5,000 faculty and staff along with 9,000 students and trainees, plans for expansions and increased enrolment outlined in the Strategic Academic Plan (2011-2016) aim to create an environment of innovation. In keeping with this goal is the creation of an efficient, sophisticated and accessible administrative suite for the executive leadership team, termed the Undergraduate Medical Education Suite. This renovation is to form the largest suite of offices in the Medical Sciences Building.

The design takes advantage of the abundant views and natural light on the north and east sides of the suite and provides private offices, open workstations, large formal meeting room space, and multiple small spaces that double as informal meeting areas for faculty and staff. An elegant and sophisticated material palette of walnut, stone and glass create a welcoming and contemporary work environment for faculty and staff while providing a clear, bold identity sought by faculty.
